Energy vs bandwidth on TRON: what's the difference?

TRON transactions consume two different resources. Knowing which is which stops you overpaying and explains why a simple TRX send is nearly free while a USDT transfer is not.

Bandwidth — the size of the transaction

Bandwidth covers the data footprint of a transaction. Every account gets a small free daily bandwidth allowance, which is why simple TRX or TRC-10 sends usually cost nothing. A basic transfer needs only a few hundred bandwidth points.

Energy — the cost of running a smart contract

Energy powers smart-contract execution. USDT is a TRC-20 token, and moving it runs contract code — which is why a USDT transfer needs a large amount of energy on top of bandwidth. This is the fee that hurts if you haven't staked or rented energy.
